Lieutenant General James M. Dubik, Ph.D.
General Dubik is a husband, father, grandfather; uncle, son, and brother; leader; innovator; author; retired army lieutenant general with over thirty-seven years of active service; and a former infantryman, paratrooper, and ranger. He is a former Commanding General, 25th Infantry Division, and former Commanding General, First U.S. Corps. His last job on active duty was Commander of the Multinational Security Transition Command-Iraq and the NATO Training Mission-Iraq during the
“Surge” of 2007 and 2008.
Currently, General Dubik is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for the Study of War and Institute for Land Warfare, as well as a 2021-2022 George Washington Research Fellow at the Fred W. Smith National Library.
He is President and CEO of Dubik Associates, an international consulting firm with a focus on leader development, organizational change, and national strategic and intelligence issues. He serves as a board member and trustee of Leadership Roundtable, as well as a member of both the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Security Advisory Council, U.S. Global Leadership Coalition.
This prolific author has published over 200 essays, articles, monographs, op-eds, chapters in books, and forwards to books. He is often quoted in print and online media. He acts as a frequent lecturer, panel member, and media analyst on national security issues.
General Dubik is the author of Just War Reconsidered: Strategy, Ethics, and Theory, and co-author, along with General Gordon Sullivan, of Envisioning Future Warfare. Additionally, he is a recurring author featured in Army Magazine.
He is the recipient of the 2017 Thomas B. Hagan Dignitas Award. He is a member of the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame, as well as a distinguished member of the U.S. Army 75th Ranger Regiment.
General Dubik received a Ph.D. in philosophy from the Johns Hopkins University, and a Master of Arts and Science from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He is a graduate of the Marine Corps’ Amphibious Warfare School, Army Command and General Staff College, and the Advanced Operational Studies Fellowship Program, U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies. He completed an MIT fellowship program for national security studies, as well as executive programs in national security at Harvard’s JFK School of Government and Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
He is a former professor at Georgetown University’s Center for Strategic Studies. From 2012-2013, he held the General Omar N. Bradley Chair in Strategic Leadership cosponsored by the Army War College, Dickinson College, and Penn State Law School. In addition to his family, military, scholarly, and leadership accomplishments, General Dubik is a former ultramarathoner.
